          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Four meridional sections were observed to research chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) distribution and its relationship with meander of the Kuroshio Extension (KE). The observation was done by Wakataka-Maru in May 1997. Two of four meridional sections crossed the KE on the meander crests. Another one crossed the KE on the meander trough and the other one crossed the KE between a crest and a trough. All four lines showed typical common features that are shallower subsurface Chl-a maximum in the north of the KE (i.e., mixed water region) and deeper subsurface Chl-a maximum in the south of the KE (i.e., subtropical region). But the KE strong current region showed different features according to the meander positions. Although the Chl-a on the crests of the KE region had the near-surface maximum, the one on the trough had the subsurface maximum. These Chl-a distribution differences are difficult to be explained by the growth of the phytoplankton. It is easily explained by the upwelling and downwelling associateded with the KE meander. Eastward propagation of the KE meander is able to produce a northward cross frontal flow from the trough to the crest and a southward one from the crest to the trough. Because the isopycnals decline in the KE region, the cross frontal flows produce upwelling from the trough to the crest and downwelling from the crest to the trough. This vertical motion is speculated to cause the Chl-a distribution difference between the crest and the trough in the KE region.</datacite:description>
          <datacite:description xml:lang="ja" descriptionType="Abstract">黒潮続流の蛇行に伴う上昇流·下降流とChl-aの分布との関係を明らかにすることを目的とし,1997年5月に東北区水産研究所若鷹丸によって,黒潮続流を横断する4本の子午面断面観測を行い,黒潮続流の峯と谷におけるChl-a分布の比較を行った.4断面に共通なChl-aの分布の特徴としては,1亜熱帯域での比較的深い(50m深付近)亜表層極大と2混合水域での比較的浅い(30m深付近)亜表層極大の存在である.黒潮続流の蛇行の峯と谷で変化するCh1-aの分布の特徴としては,3黒潮続流の谷での亜表層Ch1-a極大と黒潮続流の峯での表層Chl-a極大である.続流の蛇行の谷で亜表層Ch1-a極大が形成され,峯で表層Ch1-a極大が形成されるメカニズムを,黒潮続流の蛇行の進行に伴う流れから考察した.BOWER(1991)によるとメキシコ湾流では蛇行の東への進行に伴い,谷から峯にかけては北向きの,峯から谷にかけては南向きのメキシコ湾流の蛇行を横切る流速成分が生じる.そのため,蛇行に対する南北移動によって,蛇行の谷から峯にかけては上昇流が,峯から谷にかけては下降流が生じる.黒潮続流においても同様な効果によって,上昇流·下降流が生じると考えられ,この鉛直流によって,蛇行の谷から峯にかけては亜表層のCh1-a極大が表層にまで持ち上げられ,一方,峯から谷にかけては,表層極大が亜表層に引き下げられる.この効果によって,峯にのみ表層でのCh1-a極大が存在すると考えることが可能であることを示した.蛇行の峯と谷の位置でのCh1-aの分布の違いを引き起こすメカニズムとしては,その他に,蛇行の谷から峯にかけて存在する上昇流による下層からの栄養塩の供給による植物プランクトン増殖や,黒潮続流の蛇行の峯と谷の部分で種類の違う植物プランクトンがCh1-a極大を形成している可能性も示された.今後,どのメカニズムが本質的であるか明らかにするためには,栄養塩の分布の解析や植物プランクトンの種組成の解析が必要であると考えられる.</datacite:description>
