          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Effect of preliminary absorption by Aeromonas hydrophila on agglutinin activity to Aeromonas salmonicida in serum of amago salmon (Oncorhynchus rhodurus) was studied. Amago salmon were immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of formalinized A. salmonicida strain Gifu. After 36 days, the blood was taken from immunized and control amago salmon. For all sera, a portion of the serum was absorbed by A. hydrophila strain CB-1, and the agglutinin activity to A. salmonicida and hemolysis activity to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were measured for both absorbed and non-treated sera. Agglutinin activity to A. salmonicida in the A. salmonicida immunized serum was not affected by the preliminary absorption with A. hydrophila, but hemolysis activity to SRBC disappeared by the absorption. Both agglutinin-like activity to A. salmonicida and hemolysis activity of control serum were moderately high before absorption, but these activities almost disappeared after the absorption. These results suggest that there was the non-specific bacteriolytic and hemolytic substance(s) which was absorbed or consumed by mixing the serum with A. hydrophila. Since the non-specific bacteriolytic and hemolytic substance(s) may cause higher agglutinin and hemolytic titers, preliminary absorption, such as absorption by non-specific bacterial cells is necessary for the specific determination of agglutinin activity of amago salmon sera, especially for the sera of low level titers.</datacite:description>
