Megalopa phase was established in the normal development of a penaeid shrimp. This is a transitional phase between planktonic zoea and benthic juvenile during which reconstructions of various body parts occurs, and the bottom living habit is adopted toward the end. Six stages in the nauplius, six stages in the zoea including protozoea and 2 stages in the megalopa were recognized.
