          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Abstract It has been suggested that the eel's sensitivity to electricity plays an important role in its behavioral responses, especially in its long-distant migration and predation. The present study was conducted to examine how sensitive eels are to electic fields in the water. Examination was made on the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica about its electrosensitivity and frequency response. The response to the stimuli was observed as deceleration of rhythmic potential change synchronized with cardiac and respiratory movements which could be elicited by a pair of electrodes placed inside or outside the PVC tube where the eel was sheltering. Frequency response was not clear and no sensitivity peak was found in the range from dc to 100 Hz. The threshold voltage gradient of the fish's sensitivity to electric stimuli was determined to be in the order of mV. The eel's electrical sensitivity is at most one several ten thousandths was as low as that of the "namazu" catfish which lives in the same natural habitat. Taking into consideration this and the fact that the carp, typical of fresh-water fishes, is almost as insensitive as eel, eel's electroreception, if present, seems to have little biological significanse.</datacite:description>
          <datacite:description xml:lang="ja" descriptionType="Abstract">ウナギ類はその行動,特に摂餌や回遊行動に電気感覚を用いているのではないかとの考えが提出されている.このような仮説の当否を検討するにはその感受性が如何ほどのものかを知る必要があろう.そこで,本研究ではニホンウサギの電気感受性及び周波数特性を調べた.電気に対する反応は心拍や呼吸数の変化として観察することとし,それらの様子はウナギが自ら入り込む性質を持つ塩ビ管に予め取りつけた電極により心電及び呼吸電位として導出して,これら電位変動をブラウン管オシロスコープとペンレコーダーの上で観察した.適当な電気刺激を与えると心拍数や呼吸数の減少として反応が現われたので,電気ショックを与えることによりそれの強化を試みた.その結果,条件付が成立したと判断される時点においても,先ず周波数特性は不明瞭で,感度の極大を示すような電気刺激の周波数は確定できなかった.閾値は電位勾配として数ミリボルトのオーダーであることが分かった.この感度は同じ生息域に棲むナマズの電気感受性に比ベ少なくとも数万分の一も鈍く,また淡水系に多数の魚種を擁するコイ科魚の代表としてのコイと同程度の感受性でしかないことから,おそらくこの電気感受性は自然環境中では役立たないものと推察される.</datacite:description>
