The dietary value of rotifers cultured with T. tetrathele (TR) or both T. tetrathele and Chlorella sp. (TCR) was compared with that of rotifers cultured with Chlorella (CR) by feeding these various rotifers to larval flounder for 23 days. The rotifers enriched by Chlorella (12-24 hours) after culture with combination of ω-Yeast and T. tetrathele (ωTR-C) was also given to the larvae. Growth of larvae fed TR was better than that receiving CR (11.2 and 11.7 mm vs. 10.5 and 10.8 mm in average T.L., 3.7 and 4.1 mm vs. 2.8 and 3.1 mm in B.D., 7.3 and 9.1 mg vs. 4.3 and 5.2 mg in B.W.), although larvae fed CR were better than those receiving TR in survival rate (95.0 and 97.3% vs. 91.5 and 91.6%). Thus, the food value of TR for larval flounder was highly evaluated, and requirement of larval flounder for ω3HUFA was estimated to be less than that of red seabream judging from the following results: the growth of larvae fed on ωTR-C was almost the same as that of larvae fed on TCR without regard to a higher level of ω3HUFA in the former rotifers, i.e., 10.5 mm in ωTR-C (4.2-4.3 mg in B.W.) and 10.7 mm in TCR (5.2 mg in B.W.), although survival rate was improved by feeding TR-C and TCR, i.e., 95.0-95.1% in TR-C and 95.1% in TCR. There was no difference in stamina (activity) test among larvae fed with various feeds. The difference in growth among the larvae on various feeds might be due to the difference in the content of crude protein of rotifers, i.e., 13.4% in TR vs. 7.9-8.0% in CR. The amount of ω3HUFA in TR might be enough for larval flounder, but, combination culture (TCR) or secondary culture with Chlorella (TR-C) should be required to increase survival rate in actual levels of fry production.
