<dc:description>Male gametophytic cells of Macrocystis pyrifera were frozen and preserved in liquid nitrogen. The suspension containing the organisms was cooled at a slow rate ( < 1℃ min-1) to -40℃ in a deep freezer with a polystyrene box, and then, immersed in liquid nitrogen. The cryoprotectant mixture used consisted of 10% (v/v) dimethylsulphoxide and 0.5 M sorbitol based on autoclaved seawater. After storage in liquid nitrogen for 5 days, the cell suspension was rapidly thawed in a water bath at 40˚C, and then, the post-thaw cell viability was checked using the vital-staining method. The post-thaw viability was 45% and recovery growth of cell fragments was confirmed. This is the first report on survival of cultured cells preserved at a super-low temperature in brown algae.</dc:description>
