Total insulin levels in plasma were measured by the competitive enzyme immunoassay established previously for barfin flounder insulins (Andoh and Nagasawa, 1997). The results of amino acid administration experiments indicated that L-arginine and L-serine had strong insulinotropic effects. Weak insulinotropic effect was also observed in L-threonine, but the effect was much lower than those of L-arginine and L-serine. L-Histidine did not show any effect. This study is the first description about strong insulinotropic effect of L-serine in fish. Although plasma glucose levels increaesd after injection of every amino acids, there were no correlations between insulinotropic effects and average elevated plasma glucose levels among the four experimental groups.
