The velocity decreases from the surface to the bottom in the Oyashio with a lower gradient than the Kuroshio. On the continental slope, the Oyashio flows southwestward from the surface to the bottom in January and May, while is limited to the isobaths shallower than 2000m in June or October. The mass transport of the Oyashio has an annual cycle having a maximum of 20 - 30×106 m3/s in winter and spring and a minimum of 3 - 4×106m3/s in summer and autumn. The Sverdrup transport crossing the parallel of 42'30'N from the west coast to 170°E changes almost similarly to the Oyashio transport. These agree with that the subarctic gyre is wind-driven as has been supposed. On the other hand, the vertical gradient of the velocity increased from January to May at the depths shallower than 1500m and 1000m in 1993 and 1994, respectively.
