They were in good agreement as a whole with a correlation coefficient of 0.81. This suggests that the annual mean southernmost latitude of the FOI is governed to a great extent by the wintertime condition of midlatitude westerlies over the North Pacific. The southernmost latitude, the Sverdrup transport, and the Far East Zonal Index have a dominant 3-year and 6- to 7-year periodicities, and there exists a much longer interannual variability. From mid 1970s to the recent years, the FOI has penetrated further to the south than previously. This is due to the southward shift of the midlatitude westerly axis in winter during the period, i.e., due to a change in global atmospheric circulation.
