Photosynthetic activity (P) was measured for a range of irradiance (I) between 0 and 942 μEm-2s-1, and in a temperature range between 2 and 30˚C. The P-I curve was approximated by a hyperbolic tangent function; P=Pmax X tanh(I/Ik)-P0. The highest Pmax was 10.9 mmol O2 (g chl a)-1 min-1 at 20℃. Ik was higher than that reported for other Laminariales. Temperature optimum for photosynthesis was 15 to 20℃ when I>120 μE m-2s-1, but there was no apparent optimum peak when I<120 μE m-2s-1.
