The absolute primary productivity is very high in vernal blooming season followed by low summer value and intermediate in fall blooming season which is again followed by negligible winter value. During this course the relative abundance of zooplankton generally increases. Therefore, though individual number of the latter is always very smaller than cell number of the former, biomasses of the both become comparable during late summer and fall. This kind of seasonality in the plankton community is likely to make planktivorous Japanese sardine to change their main food items from phytoplankton to zooplankton during summer/fall feeding migration seasons into the Oyashio region. Because the seasonality mentioned above is rather regular phenomenon for many years or marked El Niño like phenomenon hardly occurs in the Oyashio region, long-term variation of the sardine population proceeds mainly with change in its intrinsic factors other than with annual fluctuation in food conditions.
