The main cause of the sea ice generation in the Sea of Okhotsk is the presence of the low salinity surface layer about 30-60m thick. As the results of ice growth, the convection in winter and the melting of ice in spring, the typical water structure in the Sea of Okhotsk is formed. By the water exchange with the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean through the Kuril Straits, the Oyashio Water is developed. However, there are a number of unclarified points regarding the volume of fresh water supply to the Sea of Okhotsk and the volume of water exchange between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean. As a preliminary study of the mass and salt budget of the Sea of Okhotsk, the volume of fresh water supply to the Sea of Okhotsk and the volume transport of Soya Warm Current (a branch of the Tsushima Current) were estimated. The fresh water supply was calculated based on the annual precipitation data (Alissow, B. P., et al. 1962) (Fig.2), annual evaportranspiration data (Zubenok, I. et al. 1977) (Fig3) and the report of the discharges of selected rivers of the world (Unesco Press 1974). The volume transport of the Soya Warm Current is estimated from the water level difference between the Japan Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk (Aota, M. et al. 1990) (Fig.1).
