It was characteristic of seasonal variation in AREA II that biomass decreased temporarily in late June after a peak in May, and increased in July. According to the monthly variations with latitude, the biomass begun to increase at the eastern sea area off Hokkaido in April, increased in the whole area in May. The biomass increased continuously in the northern area and decreased from the southern area in summer, however, it was distributed evenly low in autumn. The high values of biomass above 250 mg/m3 frequently occurred in July and August in AREA I , from May to July in AREA II , and in June and July in AREA III.
