We found a good correlation (r ≒ 0.9 and SE ≒ 0.6-0.8˚C) between satellite-measured temperatures and sea surface temperatures taken within 24 hours of the satellite overpass. Moreover, satellite-measured temperature distributions corresponded closely with subsurface temperature structures inspite of the strong stratification. Consequently, by refering the two sets of data we can delineate the water mass distributions of the Oyashio, shelf water, and a warm eddy off Kushiro.
