The maximum uptake rates (Vmax) was greatest for NH4+, and lowest for NO2-. Temperature did not affect the half-saturation constant (Ks) for NH4+ uptake, but the Ks for NO3- uptake was greater at 15℃ than at 5˚C. The uptake rate of NH4+ was greater than that of NO3- especially at higher temperature. Laminaria angustata var. longissima could take up different forms of inorganic nitrogen simultaneously. The uptake rate of NO3- and NO2- was reduced in the presence of NH4+ (as low as 1 μM), the converse was not evident. The old blade tissue of Laminaria angustata var. longissima was capable of taking up all three forms of inorganic N as newly formed blade segment. Effects of amputation of the old blade segment on the growth of the renewal blade were examined. Growth of the new blade segment without the old blade was significantly reduced.
