The optimal pH of gill Na-K-ATPase was 7.0 and its activity was inhibited by ouabain. The gill Na-K-ATPase of fish acclimatized in freshwater was activated by the addition of 25 mM Na ions and 2.5 mM K ions, whereas that of seawater acclimated fish was activated by the addition of 25 mM Na ions and 20 mM K ions. The Na-K-ATPase activity of freshwater-acclimatized fish increased in accordance with the growth of fish and attained its maximum at a size of about 65 mm (fork length) and then decreased. In case of the fish reared in seawater, however, the activity maintained almost constant independent of the size of fish. Within the range of about 47 to 90 mm in body size, the activity of freshwater acclimated fish was higher than that of seawater acclimatized fish.
