Another is the Gizhiginsk-Kamchatka population, spawning along the coast of Shelekhov Bay. But it is not so evident how these two populations distribute in the feeding season. In order to examine the possibility of separation of each population, the author investigated four meristic characters of three herring populations, above two and additionally the Korfo-Karaginsk population, distributing along the northeast coast of Kamchatka Peninsla, using samples taken from gill net and trawl catches by commercial and research vessels in the spawning season, 1975 and 1976, with the results summarized as follows : The vertebral counts ranged from 53 to 56 and the mode was at 54 for all populations. The dorsal fin rays counts ranged from 16 to 19 and the mode was at 18 for all populations. The anal fin rays counts ranged from 15 to 18 and the mode was at 16 for all populations. The gill rakers counts in lower limb of the first gill arch ranged from 41 to 49. The mode was at 46 for the Okhotsk population only and at 45 for the others. Kolmogorov-Smirnov two samples test was used to compare the frequency distribution of above four meristic characters among the three populations. Significant differences were shown in vertebral counts between the Okhotsk and the Gizhiginsk-Kamchatka, and between the Gizhiginsk-Kamchatka and the Korfo-Karaginsk population.
