The present study is a part of the survey on the effects of the oil spill, but mainly describes the distributional characteristics of benthic organisms. The vertical occurrence of large algae and a species of seagrass with brief descriptions of other small algae are given along two transects laid roughly perpendicular to the shore line, and the characteristic zonal distribution was compared between the transects. A comparison of the algal communities was also made among 5 survey sites at 6 m deep. The results indicated typical growth of Sargassum beds with high diversity, corresponding well to environmental factors such as depth. For the faunal survey, mainly vagile animals were quantitatively collected using a method of a series of five 1×1 m quadrats, supplemented by another method covering a larger sampling area for large and less abundant animals. The size composition and distributional pattern were presented and discussed for each of 21 animals which occurred in abundance. Based on the quantitative surveys for plants and animals, community analyses were made by calculating diversity and similarity indices among the survey stations. The algal community showed local differences in structure, which was likely to be attributable to water movement. The animal community was more variable and complex even within sites. Molluscs tended to be more diverse at shallower sites, and echinoderms at deeper sites. This is discussed in connection with their feeding habits. In addition, visual observations as well as photography were made to record the general appearance of the community, and consequently supported the results of quantitative samplings. The survey methods adopted were evaluated briefly. All the results from these faunal and floral surveys indicated a community structure thriving typically along open coasts in the temperate zone of Japan, suggesting that there appeared to be no drastic changes to the ecosystem caused by the oil spill at the time of the survey.
