The data used was taken from field observations at a station in the southwestern Japan Sea from 1992 to 1994. The results demonstrate that the food composition of anchovy larvae clearly reflects the seasonal succession of copepod assemblage. The spring larvae depend on the higher peak abundance of a copepod assemblage which consisted of only a few temperate species supported by the large spring phytoplankton bloom in the low temperature and high salinity water mass. The autumn larvae, however, depend on a more highly diversified copepod assemblage with a lower peak abundance of temperate-subtropical species in association with the small autumn phytoplankton bloom under high temperature and low salinity water conditions.
