It is necessary for the propagation of the clam to know whether the nature of bottom has any influence, direct or indirect, upon its growth. Clams in bamboo basket, hung in the three layers (upper, middle, lower layer) of esturine sea water (as inFig. 1) to avoid the direct effect of the bottom mud, had grown almust normally for 25 days from Sept. 25 to Oct. 20, 1953. During this period, chlorinity and temperature changed only a little, affecting no noticeable effect on clams growth. Although no recognizable correlation was found except between the density of clams and the increase in breadth of their shells as shown in Table B-2 --- Table B-6, it is generally observed that their growth is better in the lower density, and it may be concluded that the food supply is on of the primary factor for their growth. Analysis of the increase of soft part dry weight (Table C-1 --- Table C-6) and content of organic-N and glycogen in their soft part leads to the same conclusion.
