One-hundred-fifty 0 age largescale blackfish, Girella punctata Gray, having an average body weight of about 7.2g, were divided into 4 groups : Lot 1(15 individuals), Lot 2 (30 individuals), Lot 3(45 individuals) and Lot 4(60 individuals). They were fed in a 60 liter aquarium with running water system for 8weeks. The water quality in the aquaria (DO, pH and NH₃/NH₄⁺) and average body weight of each lot were examined weekly. At the end of the experiment, 15 individuals from each lot were picked and analyzed for the proximate composition (moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and crude ash). A weekly examination of the water quality in the aquaria revealed that the oxygen saturation, pH and ammonia concentration were all affected. In general, the percent oxygen saturation was higher at the beginning of the experiment in all 4 lots and then it decreased. It became less than 60% by the eighth week in Lot 3 ane Lot 4. The pH value was always lowest in Lot 4. On average it was about 0.2 pH unit lower than that of the original seawater. The ammonia concentration was, in general, highest in Lot 4. It reached 28.7 μM (0. 40ppm) at the seventh week. In Lot 3 the highest concentration was observed at the second week and it was 22.4 μM (0.31ppm). The corresponding un-ionized ammonia (NH₃) concentrations were 1.5 μM (21.0 ppb) and 1.4 μM (20.0 ppb), respectively. The growth rate in Lot 4 was much lower than that in the other 3 lots. The contents of crude protein, crude ash and moisture were also lowest in the individuals in Lot 4, while the crude lipid content was highest.
