HASLE et al. and Extubocellulus spinifer (HARG. & GUILL.) HASLE et al., which belong to Cymatosiraceae (Bacillariophyceae), were first detected from the sea around the Japanese coast, and the fine structures of these species were observed by electron microscopy. P. vanheurckii, taken from the Eastern China Sea, formed somewhat longer chains than had been reported previously. It was evident that the reflexed branches at the lower part of the marginal spines helped the cells in the formation of elongated chains. Cells of E. spinifer were collected from the Kashima-nada, off Ibaraki Prefecture in the Pacific.
