For the study of phytoplankton blooms, the outdoor culture system was believed to promise ample facilities which can .not be expected in the field observation. The experimental vessels were provided with running sea water containing natural phytoplankton flora. According to the purposes of the study, rate of water displacement and concentration of nutrients in the vessels were controlled. As the results of experiments, a large amount of red tide plankton with flagellates as dominant species was observed to occur for a long time in the vessels provided with enriched sea water at the concentration of 15 μg-at N/l and 1 μg-at P/l. Changes of the biomass were affected by water displacement rate. The maximum biomass was obtained in the vessel with a rate of 0.5 times/day. In terms of water displacement rate, another experiment showed interesting results. Namely, exchange of a half of the vessel water once a day gave a similar result to the case by continuous flow at 0.5 times/day. In this experiment, diatoms occurred dominantly when the vessel water was displaced after being stirred up, and flagellates were dominant when a batch of under-layer water was exchanged slowly. Biomass obtained in the latter case was nearly the same as that in the vessel with continuous flow at a displacement rate of 0.5 times/day. Ecological study of flagellates in the vessel with continuous flow revealed that, 1) species of flagellates appearing in the vessel seem to be associated with the speed of water current caused by water displacement, 2) unexpectedly, appreciable growth of Olisthodiscus luteus was not obtained by repeated inoculation of the organism into the vessel during the period of inoculation, 3) flagellates formed patch in the upper layer of the vessel water and did not flow out of the vessel in the daytime, and 4) even a lower concentration of phosphate-P was enough to maintain a patch of the organisms in the vessel.
