GEK data from 1971 to 1978 are analyzed. The Southward flows in Kashimanada are opposite to the geostrophic currents which are expected from temperatures or densities at a depth of 100m or 200m. The sea water of Kashimanada is pulled by the Kuroshio which flows southern part of Kashimanada from southwest to northeast. The volume of the Kashimanada water pulled by the Kuroshio is roughly estimated about 5x 10ªm3/sec above a depth of 200m. This volume corresponds to about 24% of the Kuroshio above a depth of 200m at the east of Honshu. The stability of velocities is more than 80% east of Inubosaki where the Kuroshio passes, The stability is less than 50% in the area of 36°00'N to 36°30'N, 141°30'E to 142°00'E, except during the winter season (January to March). The low stability area is recognized near the coast of Oarai in winter and spring. This is caused by the east-west fluctuation of the western boundary of warm water tongues occasionally formed during winter and spring. The suction of Kashimanada water to the Kuroshio scems to be caused by the following mechanism ; The Kuroshio flows along the coast of Boso peninsula and leaves the coast at Kashimanada. When the Kuroshio flows along the coast, it balances geostrophically. After the Kuroshio leaves the coast of Boso peninsula, the geostrophic balance is broken in Kashimanada and again the Kuroshio balances geostrophically in the east of Honshu. Kashimanada is situated in the transient area for the geostrophic adjustment of the Kuroshio.
