The present paper reports the discovery of parasitic bacteria in the diseased thalli of Undaria collected from field cultures, and also in that of thalli injured by disease induced in vitro. The bacteria which enter the medulla, through openings like dead mucilage glands, dissolve the medullary cells and cell walls, and then inflict ultrastructural damage to important cell organs of cortical and epidermal cells while propagating themselves. The most remarkable ultrastructural change which occurs in the process of rotting, is vacuolation originating in the dictyosome.
