This experiment was done to determine better food to grow juveniles of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Six species of benthic small algae (Table 2), which had been isolated and cultured separately on plastic plates in a definite medium (Table 1), were fed to abalone juveniles, 8 to 10 mm long. Shells were placed on each feeding plate in running sea water with controlled temperature (mean: 20.1˚C). The growth rate of each group was measured in a month, October to November 1971 (Table 3). Results were as follows; 1. The group fed on Nitzschia sp. cf. divergens showed the best growth. The daily increase of shell length was 221 um, and the monthly growth rate in weight was 413 percent. 2. The group fed on Nitzschia sp. cf. pseudohybrida, Navicula sp. cf. ulvacea and Navicula sp. cf. britanica showed almost the same growth, about 200 μm per day. 3. The group fed on Prasinocaldus marinas showed slower growth, 126 μm per day. 4.
