In May 1978 an isothermal water mass was observed between 146°E and 148°E at a depth of 100 m in the northweastern sea of Japan. The water mass had a temperature of 10˚C and a salinity of 34.4‰. This water mass was found every month by the oceanographical survey in that area from May to November. In summer this water mass moved westward and reached the area near Sanriku, and was covered by the water of the northward branch of the Kuroshio current, which gradually shifted westward approaching the coast of Sanriku in that season. And then this water mass was enveloped in the waters from the Kuroshio current and held at a depth below 100 m. Because of the properties of the warm water mass, it is assumed that the water mass was cut off from the northward branch of the Kuroshio current around March 1978, and then covered by the water of that branch on the surface layer. The properties of the water mass, measured at the core of the mass, were; dissolved oxygen (5.50 to 6.00 ml/l), phophate (0.8 to 1.0 μg-at/l) and nitrate (12 to 14 μg-at/l). As the thickness of the surface layer covering the submerged warm water mass increased after summer the warm water mass gradually sank below the depth of 100 m, until the bottom of the water mass reached the depths of 400 m to 500 m in autumn.
