Evident seasonal variability was found in the Tsugaru warm current area and weak seasonal variability in the first Oyashio intrusion. However, no significant seasonal variability was found in the path of the Kuroshio Extention. The time/space scale of random variability, due to eddy activity, was estimated by anomalous time/longitude matrices. In the southern domain (36-38°N), the time and zonal space scale of anomalous temperature was 6-13 months and larger than 2°E respectively. But in the northern domain (40-41˚N), both time and zonal space scales were smaller (4 months and 2°E respectively). The first three empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) explained about 60% of the total variability of anomalous temperature. The first mode of EOF (30%) explained interannual variability of the large scale north/south ward displacement of the Kuroshio Current System with timescale about 1 year. The second and third mode of EOF (20, 10% respectivly) explained mesoscale eddy activity of which timescales are 4 months.
