The larvae started feeding soon after hatching. Differentiation of gastric glands and convolution of the gut occurred around the 30th day after hatching. The adult-like digestive system was established by this stage. Before this stage typical larval characteristics of digestion and absorption were evident. That is, lipid absorption and storage by the epithelial cells of the anteromedian intestine, as well as protein ingestion and accumulation in the supranuclear vacuoles of the rectal epithelial cells. After this stage lipid storage and protein accumulation disappeared from both types of cells.
