But, we are concerned about the decline in the stocks of Japanese sardine at present. The characteristics of the purse seiner's fishing condition and available year-classes in the recent years were examined through the sardines landed in the principal landing port of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture. We estimated the body length and age compositions of the landed sardines from the landing weight of purse seine, length frequency and results of age determination by scales. It was observed from the trend of landed weight by month at Hachinohe Port that the sardine up north and down south were landed earlier in the fishing season in recent years. The 1988 year-class was a very poor catch of age 0 to age 2. The available catches of 1989 and 1990 year-classes was also poor.
