The proportion of polymorphic loci was 0.313±0.018, the observed heterozygosity was 0.1430.008, and the expected heterozygosity was 0.151±0.009. An excess of homozygotes was observed in all populations of the natural abalone. Any two of the 9 different sampling sites showed clear differences in gene frequencies at more than one locus, indicating that they have a breeding structure independent of each other. The mean genetic distance was larger among local populations than within a local population. The genetic distance was 0.0019±0.0013 on the average for all populations, the value being smaller than 0.01 which is considered as the level of a local race.
