In addition, caloric consumption of these fish was estimated from the quantities of protein and fat lost from the body during starvation.Condition factor, fat and protein content in the body increased as the size of fish increased. In all sizes of fish tested, the condition factor decreased lineally during starvation, and the death occurred when it dropped to approximately 6. The peak of mortality for larger fish occurred later than that of smaller fish. The rates of decline in condition factor, fat and protein during starvation for larger fish were less than those for smaller fish. In the early period of starvation, fat was mainly used for catabolism until it reached an almost constant level of 0.7 - 0.9% of body weight regardless of the size of fish, thereafter, protein became a main source of energy. The caloric consumption per unit body weight per day was in a range of 21.6 - 28.8 kcal/kg/day and decreased as the size of fish increased.
