In the unstratified vertical tank at 35.2‰ salinity, the larvae showed a clear positive phototaxis during the trochophore stage. But, trochophore larvae were not swimming to the light source of the upper layer when the sea water of the upper layer was more diluted at 28.6‰ salinity. Differences of effects of reduced salinity on the negative geotaxis were detected in both of trochophore and veliger larvae. Under a slightly reduced salinity at 28.2‰ of the upper layer, the majority of trochophore larvae remained at the lower layer of 35.2‰, but that of veliger larvae was found at the upper layer of 28.2‰. While, the greater part of veliger larvae was observed in the lower layer when the salinity of the upper layer was reduced to 17.6‰.
