The becterial density exhibited negative correlation with the exchange rate of water (log BD=3.65-1.25 log E, P<0.001). When the exchange rate was greater than 0.2 h-1, most of bacteria in the water were derived from the periphytic bacteria. The calculated growth rate of these periphytic bacteria was about 0.01 h-1.
