T4 treatment caused body silvering, an elevated plasma T4 level, and hypofunctional features both of the thyroid gland and of the pituitary TSH cells. On the other hand, TU treatment induced darker body color, hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, and hypertrophy of the pituitary TSH cells. However, neither of these treatments affected some other physiological parameters examined that are considered to be criteria characteristic of smolt status of salmonids.
