Scallop spats produced in the laboratory were cultured in Gokasho Bay, Mie Prefecture. Specimens were sampled monthly from 5 months to 20 months of age. The reproductive cycle was biannual; the first spawning period from June to July was followed by the second spawning period from October to November. Most of juveniles at 8 and 9 months of age were male with spermatozoa. Thereafter a few female were observed at 11 months of age. Hermaphrodites observed at 10 and 11 months of age suggest the possibility of sex reversal from male to female.
