The special thecal cells in the preovulatory follicles contained most of ultrastructural features of typical steroid producing cells such as mitochondria with tubular cristae and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, while granulosa cells developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex like protein-secreting cells. Dilation of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the granulosa cells and further development of mitochondria in the special thecal cells were observed during oocyte maturation. The special thecal cells of the postovulatory follicles still possessed the ultrastructural features of the steroid producing cell, but the granulosa cells already had the lysosome like bodies in their cytoplasm.
