Eggs of nigorobuna Carassius auratus grandoculis and gengorobuna C. a. cuvieri were irradiated with doses from 5 to 400 Gy and fertilized with normal spermatozoa of the goldfish Carassius auratus auratus. Hertwig effect and inactivation of the maternal genome were analysed using of survival rate, hatching rate, nuclear DNA content of embryonic cells and DNA fingerprint data. More than 80% ofthe eggs for each species cleaved at any dosage. In C. a. cuvieri hatching rates decreased from 96.8% at 0 Gy to 0% at 50 Gy, and then recovered to 11.4 percent at 300 Gy. In C. a. cuvieri haploidy wasconfirmed by DNA content of embryonic cells and DNA fingerprints demonstrated that most of the maternal DNA was eliminated at dosages above 100 Gy. Survival rates for both species decreased until 100 Gy, but strikingly increased again at 200 Gy. All embryos showed haploid syndrome at doses higher than 200 Gy. In conclusion, androgenesis was successfully induced in C. a. grandoculis and C. a. cuvieri eggs irradiated at a dosage of more than 200 Gy and fertilized with normal sperm.
