Ultraviolet light (254 nm) was used to inactivate sperm DNA. Irradiation for 2 min at an intensity of 620 μW/cm2/s was the most successful in achieving gynogenetic development. A haploid genome was not sufficient for development beyond the trochophore stage. Suppression of the formation of polar body II or both polar bodies I and II by cytochalasin B (CB, 1 mg/L) increased the gynogenetic genome to a diploid or greater state resulting in development to D-stage and beyond. Putative gynogenetic larvae exhibited slower growth and lower survival compared to the controls.
