内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 To delineate a pattern in the gradients of the community parameters of the macrobenthos, and to assess the possible relationships of environmental factors to this pattern, a quantitative bay-wide survey was conducted in August-September 1992 and March-April 1993 in Omura Bay, which has an enclosed basin suffering depleted oxygen concentrations during summer. High values for biomass, density and the number of species occurred in the mouth or the peripheral part of the bay, while in the main basin the values were relatively low. This spacial pattern did not vary with the season, although these parameters increased in the spring. Community parameters and environmental factors were tested for correlations. Density and the number of species were positively correlated to dissolved oxygen in the bottom water in the summer. But, coefficients of these correlations were low (r= 0.599, 0.617) in comparison with those as to the sediment factors (the silt-clay fraction, Mdϕ, ignition loss, and CODsed) which showed significant negative relations to the community parameters (r< -0.81, p<0.001). This may result in applying temporary DO values at the sampling time. High abundance and increased species richness in sandy areas are explained by assuming that these areas have a rich variety of microhabitats and food availability based on high velocities of water movement. Large biomasses at the innermost part of the bay near sewage outlets suggest that a relatively high concentration of sulfide (0. 45-0. 75 mg g⁻¹ dry sediment) never prevents distributions of animals and that organic enrichment of the sediments is sufficient to provide a rich food source but is not yet high enough to cause serious oxygen depletion.
