The virus was found to be pathogenic to all sizes of Japanese eels used in this study. At the water temperature of 14.5-18.5℃, almost all the fish infected with the virus showed the ymptoms such as decoloration, congestion of the anal, pectoral, and dorsal fins, and increase of mucus of the body surface 3-5 days after infection, and subsequently deaths began. Death of the infected fish was observed for about two weeks resulting the mortality of 40-75%. At the water temperatures of 22.8°C and 24.1℃, only a limited number of fish showed above mentioned clinical symptoms, and the mortality was reduced to 15% at 22.8°C and 0% at 24.1°C, respectively. In contrast to Japanese eels, European eels showed no susceptibility to this virus.
