To ensure long-term sustainable use of this resource, it is necessary to promote a better management strategy based on its stock abundance. To investigate the crab stock abundance estimate derived from the fishing effort obtained from the fishing reports, the effective fishing area per commercial trap was estimated using a deep-sea video monitoring system on a towed sledge. The observations by this system and trap fishing operations were performed in Yamato-tai (bank) in the Sea of Japan in August, 2002. The effective fishing area per commercial trap was estimated to be between 400m2 trap and 6,500m2/ trap and greatly fluctuated.
