In this paper, we have evaluated the three-dimensional measurement accuracy of the catadioptric stereo camera system in FISCHOM. The camera system was calibrated by the direct linear transformation (DLT) method. The DLT method does not need any camera constants, but the stereo camera needs to photograph several control points (which the three-dimensional positions are already known) in advance for calibration. To obtain the images of control points, FISCHOM was fixed at the edge of an experimental tank, and optical targets were hung down on below an electric carriage on the tank and their images were recorded by FISCHOM. The carriage was moved to keep the targets in the visual field at ranges of 200cm to 500cm from FISCHOM. Errors in three directions seen from the camera were measured and the three-dimensional measurement accuracy was evaluated by a root mean square (RMS) error of the measured positions of optical targets. Average RMS error was about 3cm within 500cm from FISCHOM. Known lengths between two neighboring targets arranged perpendicular to the optical axis of the stereo camera were also measured and the errors were evaluated. The average error was about 2.5% within 500cm from FISCHOM.
