| 内容記述 | Because of cryptic habitats of the disc abalone, Haliotis discus discus, it is difficult to trace individual abalone in the field. To overcome this difficulty, we attempted to attach an ultrasonic transmitter to the abalone and tracking them in the field. Their experiments were made in November or December of each 1990, 1991 and 1992 for a period of one week in 1990 and about two weeks in 1991 and 1992. The tracking success after one week from release was 40 to 80% (average 68%). Many abalones were difficult to find visually without the aid of ultrasonic transmitter, because they were in the cracks of rocks and behind the rocks. Most of abalone had moved in an offshore direction, which was probably to be related to the direction of waves, or migration pattern after spawning, as suggested by previous workers. The range of distances they moved from the releasing points was varied considerably, i.e., 0 meters for 15 days to 20 meters for only one night. As a general trend, abalones tended to hide in dark places, then emerged in lighter places in the course of tracking. Possible effect of handling to attach ultrasonic transmitter to subsequent behavior of abalones is discussed. | |||||
