In a previous article the author reported the occurrence and horizontal distribution of larvae and pelagic juveniles of the red seabream Pagrus major in Shijiki Bay of Hirado Island. In the present paper, the vertical distribution of the larvae is described, and discussed in relation to their transportation from the spawning grounds to the nursery ground in Shijiki Bay. Before the experiments for vertical distribution, the comprehensive survey was undertaken at 37 stations in the northern part of Goto Nada on 8th and 9th of May 1976. 69 red seabream larvae were caught by 37 oblique hauls by larva net. The occurrence of the larvae were restricted to the southern part of the area surveyed. A free-drifting drogue set at 10 m depth was deployed to remain in a same water mass. Following the drogue, discrete-depth sampling by larva nets were made every 4 hours at 0, 10, 20, and 40 m depth on 10th to 18th of May 1976. 682 red seabream larvae and pelagic juveniles were caught by 99 horizontal hauls. The free-drifting drogue showed the semi-diurnal leftward circular tidal currents. The average drifting speed during 30 minutes or one hour were 5 cm/s to 267 cm/s, while the northerly net drift were extremely short against the actual drift due to rotary currents. The hydrographic conditions seem to be almost homogeneous vertically, there being no sign of the thermal and saline stratifications. The red seabream larvae were most abundant at 40 m depth and fewest at 0 m during the day-time, while during the night-time most abundant at 10 m depth with considerable increase in number at 0 m. These facts indicate the occurrence of the diel vertical migration in this species. Averaged day-time depths of early postlarvae were about 20 m, deepening with increase of size until 40 m for 7 mm larvae. Since larger larvae beyond 7 mm were scarcely caught, the ontogenetic vertical distribution could not be observed in the larger larvae and pelagic juveniles. At night, on the other hand, any clear tendency was not observed in their averaged depth. The vertical distribution of the red seabream larvae showed considerable variability during continuous sampling times and among days staying in a same water mass. The variations seem to be caused by the combined effects of biological and environmental factors. From the results obtained in this investigation, it was advanced the possibility of transportation and recruitment process of larvae and pelagic juveniles from southern spawning grounds to Shijiki Bay.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"},{"subitem_description":"平戸島志々伎湾へのマダイ仔魚の補給機構に関する研究の一環として,1976年5月8~18日に平戸島周辺海域において浮遊生活期のマダイ仔魚の垂直分布に関する調査を行ない,以下のような結果を得た. 1. 五島灘北部海域に設けた37定点において,稚魚網による水深50m層から表層までの斜め曳により69尾のマダイ仔魚を得た.それらの大部分は南部の定点と平戸島に近接した定点に限定され,水温17.5℃の等温線より北の定点には全く出現しなかった. 2. 平戸島南部及び西部海域において,10m層に垂下した海流板を追跡しながら,3時間間隔で0·10·20·40mの4層の稚魚網水平曳を実施した.5回の追跡中99回の稚魚網曳網により682尾のマダイ仔稚魚を採集した.3. 海流板はほば左旋性の流跡を描きながら北へ流れた. 海流板の平均流速は平戸島南部海域では 最大267cm/s にも達したが,半日あるいは1日単位の実質的な移動距離は極めて短い傾向がみられた.4. 昼間の採集では,マダイ仔稚魚は,40m層に最も多く,次いで10m層及び20m層に多く,表層には極めて少なかった.一方,夜間採集では,表層や10m層での増加が顕著で,日周期的な垂直移動の存在が示唆された.その移動距離は10m程度と推定された. 5. 採集されたマダイ仔魚は,全長3mm台が最も多く,次いで2mm台が多く,両者で全体の75.2%を占めた. 全長10mmを超える稚魚はわずかに5尾のみで,最大個体は13.1mmであった. 6. 全長1mmごとの平均分布水深より,昼間の分布層は成長とともに20m台から30m台へと深くなる傾向がみられた.一方夜間の分布水深には傾向的な変化はみられなかった.ただし,7mm以上の個体については個体数が少ないため明瞭な傾向は把握できなかった.7. 海流板追跡中にもマダイ仔魚の垂直分布状態はかなり多様に変化する傾向がみられ,生物的·非生物的諸条件の影響が推察された.8. 五島灘北部海域の 広域的な
