Mucous granules, showing remarkable metachromasia, were formed in the mucous cells lccated in basement connective tissue of the pearl-sac epithelium. These mucous granules were secreted into the space surrounded by pearl-sac epithelium where the nacre is formed. Just after secretion, they become fluid and spread over the epithelial surface (figs. 1-4).
