histochemical studies on the organic matrices in non-mineralized and mineralized layers of shells were carried out with several species belonging to the three groups of Cephalopoda, Gastropoda and Bivalvia for exploring the property of the organic matrices in mineralized layers. \n2) Calcium in mineralized layers was removed with 10% aquatic solution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt at pH of 7.5 to 8.5. \n3) The organic matrices of non-mineralized layers were acidophil, whereas those of mineralized layers were rather basophil or contained basophil matrix. 4) The prismatic layers of Ostrea, Pinctada and Pinna consisted of the interlaced tissue in which thin mineral lamellae were alternately piled up with the basophil organic matrix, interlamellar one, within individual prisms surrounding by the acidophil organic matrix, interprismatic one. \n5) Acid mucopolysaccharides were only located in mineralized layers in no connection with the structure and locality of them, but not in any of non-mineralized layers and acidophil matrix. \n6) The matrices of mineralized layers with corresponding structures had the similarity and identity of staining and histochemical 生物系における鉱物化にあたって,蛋白質および多糖類が重要な役割を演じていると考えられている。この問題を解明するために,軟体動物貝殻の非鉱物化層と鉱物化層の有機基質の染色および組織科学反応を調べ,比較研究した。\n2) 非鉱物化層の有機基質は好酸性を示し,鉱物化層のそれはどちらかと言えば好塩基性を示した。\n3) 総ての種類で,鉱物化層には PAS 陽性物質が認められたが,非鉱物化層には必ずしも認められなかった。\n4) 酸性粘液多糖類の存在が非鉱物化層で認められなかったのに対し,鉱物化層に認められた。\n5) 同一構造からなる層の基質の染色特性は,貝の種類や層の貝殻内での形成位置に関係なく,類似ないし一致を示した。\n6) 真珠層を構成している鉱物板間基質と結晶間基質とは類似ないし一致した染色性を示し、酸性粘液多糖類が両者に認められた。\n7) 稜柱層を構成している個々の稜柱は,好酸性の柱状基質に囲まれた部屋の中に,好塩基性膜状基質と calcite
