中層垂下養殖と海底養殖の二つの異なった養殖条件下におけるアコヤガイの活力を1975年～1977年の３年間にわたって比較した。\n2) 中層と底層との環境条件の比較を行なうため水温，塩素量，溶存酸素量，クロロフィルa量，懸濁物量およびCODについて観測し，一方，貝の活力を比較するための指標として杆晶体，肉質湿重量・乾燥重量および貝殻重量を測定した。また，多毛虫の貝殻侵蝕率を調査した（1975年は除く）。3.27℃以上の高水温期間の長短，最高水温値の高低，クロロフィルa量の減少度合などによって中層と底層との環境条件には差がみられ，おおむね底層の方が良好な環境条件であったとみなされた。\n4) 貝の活力の動向は，1975年は底層が高く，1976年，1977年は中層が全般的に高かった。また斃死率は，1975年の中層がとくに高いほかは差は認められなかった。\n5) 中層の環境が極度に悪化した場合は，貝の活力・斃死率の面では底層が優位であるが，中層の環境が良好か，もしくは中層と底層が同程度の場合は，中層の方が優位であると推察された。\n6)
