However, a development program for chum salmon has been in place since the 1960s with the result that hatchery-rearing and fanning/ranching now supply the majority of chum salmon harvested in Japan. Although Japanese chum salmon stocks have been stable for nearly 30 years, problems,such as global warming, adaptation/acclimation and genetic diversities,have been noted. Future developments and innovation require a historical review of the technical and practica1 aspects of salmon propagation.
