The rice-fish farmers are of advancing age (average, nearly 70 years), and there has been no recent recruitment of new participants. Because the larval fish in the paddies depend on natural feed, organic materials are distributed to support the growth of zooplankton. Most of the farmers hesitate to use agricultural chemicals because of their potentially negative effects on the fish, although the older farmers tend to accept the use of herbicides. More than half of the farmers were aware that the eco-friendly system of rice-fish culture adds value to the rice as a safe food for consumers.
